In 2018, Stuff the Bus Distributed almost 800 Backpacks to Kids in Need!

Congratulations to the many volunteers who gathered to collect school supplies and who volunteered to distribute backpacks in 2018. Thanks to our generous donors, students around South Eddy County received backpacks filled with the supplies needed for success in school.

Why is This Important?

In 2018, there were more than 250 students in South Eddy County who were homeless, and about 500 students who were financially vulnerable. Stuff the Bus helped these children, and many others, start school equipped with the supplies they need to be ready to learn. Backpacks were distributed throughout South Eddy County via a collaboration between United Way of Carlsbad & South Eddy County and another local non profit. Read the FAQ's.

The number of students facing homelessness in South Eddy County has increased over the past several years. It’s more than just a backpack, Stuff the Bus eases the financial burden on families and gives children a boost of self confidence. These students often struggle in school. Of homeless elementary students, only 28% are proficient in reading and 17% in math. Many drop out without earning a high school degree

Homeless children are defined as those "who lack a fixed, regular and adequate nighttime residence." Examples that fall under this definition:

  • Sharing overcrowded housing because of economic hardship

  • Living in motels, hotels, trailer parks or camp grounds due to lack of alternative accommodations

  • Living in emergency or transitional shelters

  • Children and youth whose primary nighttime residence was not designed for human habitation (e.g. backyard tents, garages, park benches, etc.)

  • Those living in cars, parks, public spaces, abandoned buildings, substandard housing, bus or train stations

  • Migratory children and youth living in any of the above situations

In addition to the almost 800 backpacks distributed to the most vulnerable children in our communities, every local public school in Carlsbad & Loving received school supplies to distribute to any student that lacks the proper supplies to begin school with
